Dream Lover Excerpt Four

Every part of Suzanne ached. But despite the unrelenting pain, she felt elation knowing she was alive. Overcome with nausea, Suzanne vomited up the contents of her stomach until nothing remained. She was shaking with dry heaves, sapping what little strength remained. It was raining heavily, and Suzanne was drenched and chilled to the bone. With one last ounce of strength, she managed to crawl over to her handbag, which lay open on the cold, wet ground. Gritting her teeth against the pain, Suzanne reached for it. Hopefully, her phone was still there, and she would call 911. The effort was too much, and Suzanne passed out, her fingers mere inches from the phone.

The angel watched over her twin while waiting for help to arrive. Sadly, Arianna stroked Suzanne’s damp blond hair. She wished that she could switch places with Suzanne, so she would not have to endure any more pain and suffering. Arianna focused all of her energy on her sister’s head wound, hoping to staunch the blood flow. It helped somewhat, but not enough. Feeling impotent, the angel wept. As the silvery tears fell, Arianna wished they were wet and salty. Feeling guilty, Arianna scolded herself for having blasphemous thoughts.

A stray dog whimpered and slunk along the ground, making its way towards them. The angel sent her love to the pitiful creature that was near death from starvation. Arianna watched as its flesh filled out. In its place now stood a German shepherd in the prime of life. The angel knew that the dog would find a new home soon, and the news gladdened her. The dog licked Suzanne’s hand, and then it sat quietly, guarding the unconscious woman.

Suzanne was oblivious to her surroundings. Her sister held her hand while the shepherd lay down beside them to rest. When a rat ventured near, he growled at the rodent, watching it scurry away to join the others in search of its next meal.
